I think psychology is the best science for discussing violent media and its effects on people, and the APA has one of the better psychology journals. Search google for "APA violent media" or "APA violent games" for a few decent articles.

After reading some of these articles, it's pretty hard to argue that playing violent video games has no effect on you, but... hey, GTA is fun!! I've managed to live through my teenage years committing no murders while playing mortal kombat, doom, etc...

Jake is right when he says that a few hours of a video game aren't enough to corrupt a child who has good role models in the rest of his life. Playing a few hours of a violent game is fine for an adult, but the responsibility of preventing kids from being raised by games and TV is on the parents, store owners, and older cousins who don't put a password on their screensaver (!).

I think if something like GTAIV can drive someone to act out antisocially, then they've probably led the sort of existence that has predisposed them to those sort of actions already. Ian Curtis might have killed himself after watching Stroszek, but that doesn't mean Stroszek poses a suicide risk for everyone who watches it; it just means he was at a point in his life where he considered suicide an option and saw a particularly down movie.
